In this article, I will show you some 
common idioms related to food.
 

Food idioms 



About as useful as a chocolate teapot

Definition: Saying something is about as useful as a chocolate teapot means that it is totally useless.

المعنى المجازى:عديم الفائدة تماما
Example

A car in a heavy traffic jam is as useful as a chocolate teapot. Use a bike instead!




Above the salt

Definition: If someone is above the salt 
they are of high standing or honor.

المعنى المجازى: ذا منزلة أو شرف

The origin of the phrase dates back to the medieval times. Then salt which was a valuable seasoning was placed in the middle of a dining table and the lord and his family were seated "above the salt" 
and other guests or servants below.


Example
In medieval times lords used to sit above

Apple of somebody's eye 

Definition: Said about someone whom of.
you love the most and you are very 
.proud

المعنى المجازى: يُقال عن شخص تحبه أكثر من غيرك وأنت فخورة جدًا.

Example

.His son is the apple of his eye.


All one's eggs in one basket

Definition: the state of having invested heavily in just one area or of having devoted all of one's resources to one  .thing.

المعنى المجازى: حالة الاستثمار بكثافة في مجال واحد فقط أو تخصيص كل موارد الفرد لشيء واحد .


Example
The stock market decline wouldn't have hurt him so badly if he hadn't had all his .eggs in one basket.


Bad egg

Definition: Bad person

المعنى المجازى: شخص سيء.
Example
Just ignore him. He's a bad egg


Banana repulic

Definition: A small country, especially one in Central America, that is dependent on a single export commodity (traditionally bananas) and that has a corrupt, dictatorial government.

المعنى المجازى: دولة صغيرة ، خاصةً دولة في أمريكا الوسطى ، تعتمد على سلعة تصدير واحدة (الموز تقليديًا) ولديها حكومة فاسدة وديكتاتورية.

Below the salt

Definition: If someone is below the salt they are common or of low standing.

المعنى المجازى: شائع أو منخفض المكانة.

In medieval times servants used to below .the salt
 

Bear fruit

Definition: The phrase bear fruit means to yield successful results.

المعنى المجازى: تعني عبارة تؤتي ثمارها الحصول على نتائج ناجحة.

Example
He thinks his new plan will. undoubtedly bear fruit 


Bring home the bacon

Definition: Get a job and bring home money earned from this job.

المعنى المجازى: الحصول على وظيفة وإحضار الأموال المكتسبة من هذه الوظيفة إلى المنزل.


Example
When her husband got fired, she decided to look for a job because someone's got 
 to bring home the bacon 

Chew the cud

Definition: The idiom chew the cud means to ponder over or meditate about something; to think carefully about something.
Cud refers to the food regurgitated from the stomach to the mouth of a ruminant animal such as a cow and chewed again.

المعنى المجازى:التفكير في شئ ما أو التأمل فيه.


Example
She wanted to chew the cud before she 
could let them know about her decision

Cool as a cucumber

Definition: Very calm.

المعنى المجازى: هادئ جدا.

Example
It's amazing that he never shows his emotions even when he has a lot of 
problems. He's cool as a cucumber


Walk on eggs

Definition: (Also walk on thin ice and walk on eggshells) be very carefully.


المعنى المجازى: كن حذرا جدا.

Example
 I was walking on eggs when I told her 
.about the truth


Separate the wheat from the chaff 

Definition: To separate things of value from things of no value.

المعنى المجازى:فصل الأشياء ذات القيمة عن الأشياء التي لا قيمة لها.


Example
We got a lot of applicants for the job. But 
we are trying to separate the wheat from 
the chaff

You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar

Definition: The proverb you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar means that it is much easier to get what you want by being polite rather than by being rude and insolent.

المعنى المجازى: الأسهل بكثير الحصول على ما تريد بأن تكون مهذبًا بدلاً من أن تكون فظًا وقحًا.




Example
Just be polite when you ask for something. You know, you can catch .more flies with honey than with
vinegar


 That's the way the cookie crumbles

Definition: (Also that's the way the ball bounces) said to show that things don't always turn out the way we hope.

المعنى المجازى:(هذه أيضًا هي الطريقة التي ترتد بها الكرة) لإظهار أن الأشياء لا تسير دائمًا بالطريقة التي نأملها.


Example
In spite of her kindness she is the least popular in her class. But, that's the way  
the cookie crumbles..
